Course Structure: What You’ll Learn 

The PADI Rescue Diver course runs over 3 to 4 days and includes three key components: 

1. Knowledge Development 

You’ll start by building a strong theoretical foundation. This part of the course can be completed through e-learning before you arrive or through instructor-led sessions once you’re here. Topics include: 

  • Recognizing diver stress and fatigue
  • Managing panic underwater and at the surface
  • Handling unresponsive divers

  • First aid for dive-related injuries 

You’ll also prepare an Emergency Assistance Plan for a dive site—a key requirement for your certification. 

2. Confined Water Training

Medical Requirements

Keeping the following things in mind regarding medical requirements for scuba diving:

  • One should have a minimum level of health and fitness for scuba diving. In case of any chronic health conditions, certain medications and/or recent surgery, one may have to get written approval from a physician before the dive.
  • In order to avoid any hassle, you can download and review the Diver Medical form. With this, you can know before enrolling in a scuba course that you will not need a physician’s approval for diving.
  • You should not ask for any medical advice from instructors, dive masters, and dive shop staff as they are not physicians. Only medical professionals can give medical clearance to scuba dive.
  • In case of any confusion regarding medical fitness, you can contact the experts at Divers Alert Network (DAN).

Prerequisites & Minimum Age

Minimum age: 12 years

Those rescue divers who are certified between the ages of 12-14 years earn a Junior Rescue Diver certification. Any eCard or replacement certification card purchased after the scuba diver’s fifteenth birthday will automatically show a Rescue Diver (not Junior Rescue Diver) certification.

Course prerequisites - If you have an Open Water/Junior Open Water Diver certification, then you can enrol in a PADI Rescue Diver course, complete Rescue Diver eLearning and take part in Rescue Exercises in confined water. In order to participate in open water rescue exercises and get certified as a PADI Rescue Diver, you should complete the Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive and hold a PADI (Junior) Adventure Diver certification. 

A PADI or any other qualifying Advanced Open Water Diver certification is also acceptable. CPR and first aid training within the past 24 months are also required for certification. You can enrol in an Emergency First Response (EFR) Primary Care (CPR) and Secondary Care (First Aid) course with your instructor in case you don’t have this training.

Other Costs & Equipment

PADI Rescue Diver comprises knowledgeable development as well as in-water training for certification. If you buy a PADI eLearning course, then only the knowledge development part is covered. In order to complete your certification with a PADI instructor, there will be an additional cost. The charges will depend on class size, environment, and whether or not you need to rent scuba diving equipment. Along with basic scuba gear, you will also require a diving accident management slate and a rescue breathing mask. Consult your instructor about buying them. It is recommended that you invest in a set of personal scuba gear before starting the PADI Rescue Diver course. After PADI Rescue Diver course

The skills and confidence you will gain in the PADI Rescue Diver course will help you in taking the first step towards a scuba career and/or achieving the most elite rating in recreational diving. You can enrol in the PADI Divemaster course as a certified Rescue Diver (18 years or older). After completing it, you can work anywhere across the world where there is water. You can:

  • Work on a liveaboard

A PADI Rescue Diver certification is also a prerequisite for enrolling in the Public Safety Diver course. You will get great rewards in this challenging and intense program.
